20 Day Everest Base Camp Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive Kathmandu
Arrive Kathmandu. You will be met on arrival at the Tribhuwan International Airport by one of Escape Trekking Adventures Nepalese staff members. From the airport you will be transferred to your Hotel.
Day 2 Equipment check and Kathmandu sightseeing
After Shane conducts an equipment check to ensure you have the correct clothing and equipment you will spend the remainder of the day sightseeing Kathmandu. Our in-house city guide will accompany you explaining the historical sights and cultural meanings of such places.
Day 3 Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla and trek to Phakding
Early morning flight to Lukla. The duration of the flight is around 30 minutes. At Lukla, you will meet up with your porters and other trek staff. After a quick breakfast, begin trekking. Today’s three to four hour trek to Phakding is on fairly level trail.
Day 4 Phakding to Namche
Today you will enter the Sagarmatha National Park at Monju. After lunch, past Jorsalle, begins the grueling climb to the largest Sherpa village in the Khumbu region – Namche. Weather permitting, today, you will get your first view of Mt. Everest.
Day 5 Namche acclimatisation day
Today is an acclimatisation day although we will take the team on an acclimatisation walk high above Namche.
Day 6 Namche to Tengboche
From Namche, walk on level trail for a while enjoying mountain views although a grueling three to four hours of uphill awaits us for the trek up into Tengboche. This afternoon you have the option to join the prayer ceremony at the Tengboche monastery.
Day 7 Tengboche to Dingboche
From today, you will start to notice the change in the landscape. Forests give way to arid landscape with shrubs. Ascend gradually to Pangboche and then to Dingboche in the Imja valley.
Day 8 Dingboche acclimatisation day
Today is a day for acclimatisation. This morning we will hike up past the Nangkar Tshang Gompa for an acclimatisation walk (walk high sleep low) and Shane will set up a fixed line to the side of the hill and you will have the opportunity to part take in fixed line ascending just like the expedition teams on Everest do.
Day 9 Dingboche to Dughla
This morning we climb gradually to the top of a hill overlooking the Pheriche valley. Cross a few pastures and make a short but steep ascent to Dughla where you will reach for lunch.
Day 10 Dughla acclimatisation day
Today is a rest day for acclimatisation. This morning we will demonstrate glacier travel techniques, and how climbing partners move together on high alpine mountains.
Day 11 Dughla to Lobuche
The trail is steep at first until the terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. This is an area with monuments dedicated to climbers who have perished on Khumbu’s mountains. We take our time at this point as the high altitude begins to take effect. Past this point it is a gradual ascent to Lobuche where, again, you will arrive before lunch.
Day 12 Lobuche to Gorakshep and Everest Base Camp
Ascend gently through meadows and then cross several steep moraines to Gorakshep which is situated on a sandy and flat section that served as base camp for the 1952 Swiss Everest expedition. From Gorakshep, you may opt to continue to the Everest Base Camp walking through jumbles of small rocks and boulders but you must return to Gorakshep for the night. The round-trip hike from Gorakshep to Base Camp can take around four to five hours.
Fay 13 Gorakshep to Periche after Kalapathar ascent early morning
Early this morning we hike up to the top of Kalapathar (5,545m/18,195 ft.) for views of Everest. This 310m/1,117 ft. steep ascent is challenging. Previous clients’ times for this climb have ranged from 2-3 hours – one way. At a slow and steady pace we move into position to see the all mighty beast, weather permitting the summit of Kalapathar serves as one of the best face-to-face view-point for the southern massif of Mt. Everest and the south col. We continue a long slow descent to Periche, this valley can be quite often windy, keep your gortex or outer wind proof layers handy this afternoon.
Day 14 Periche To Namche
After a short walk up the Periche pass we walk along some fairly flat terrain before descending down to our lunch stop. After lunch we have a short ascent to Tengboche and another long descent and some more climbing to Namche.
Day 15 Namche to Monjo
This morning we rise much later and depart Namche picking up a souvenir or two before we walk to Jorsalle. This afternoon we climb a short section until Monjo.
Day 16 Monjo to Lukla
Today sadly marks the last day of trekking as you re-trace the trail to Lukla. Enjoy the moment you walk through the gates together as a team.
Day 17 Lukla spare day for weather delays
Today allows for the unpredictable weather delays that plague the Everest Region.
Day 18 Lukla to Kathmandu
This morning we take the short 10 minute walk around to the airport and fly from Lukla to Kathmandu. The rest of the day is spent cleaning and relaxing around the hotel.
Day 19 Kathmandu sightseeing
Enjoy the last day in Kathmandu sightseeing before we have a farewell dinner together at a 5 star restaurant enjoying one of your western favourites.
Today is also an additional day allowance for weather delays getting in and out of Lukla which is quite common at any time of the year. Short programs equal less chance of completing your goal and spoiling your amazing holiday by trying to rush an high altitude trek.
Day 20 Departure day from Kathmandu
Depart for home as your adventure has come to an end or go onwards to your other destinations.
